- 3 large sweet potatoes (about 1.5 kg), peeled and sliced into thin rounds
- 500 g ground beef or lamb
- 2 medium yellow onions, chopped
- 3 garlic cloves, minced
- 400 g canned tomatoes
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- ½ tsp ground nutmeg
- 4 tbsp olive oil
- 50 g butter
- 50 g all-purpose flour
- 500 ml milk
- 100 g grated Parmesan or feta cheese
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Peel and slice the sweet potatoes into thin rounds.
- In a large skillet over medium heat, warm olive oil and sauté chopped onions until translucent. Add minced garlic and cook until fragrant.
- Stir in the ground meat, cooking until browned. Add canned tomatoes, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and pepper; simmer for about 10 minutes.
- In a separate saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Whisk in flour; then gradually add milk while whisking until thickened.
- Layer half of the sweet potato slices in a baking dish, followed by half of the meat mixture. Repeat layers with remaining ingredients.
- Pour béchamel sauce over the top layer and sprinkle with cheese.
