Description

Sweet potato moussaka is a heartwarming dish that combines layers of sweet potatoes, savory ground meat, and a creamy béchamel sauce.   • 3 large sweet potatoes (about 1.5 kg), peeled and sliced into thin rounds
  • 500 g ground beef or lamb
  • 2 medium yellow onions, chopped
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 400 g canned tomatoes
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • ½ tsp ground nutmeg
  • 4 tbsp olive oil
  • 50 g butter
  • 50 g all-purpose flour
  • 500 ml milk
  • 100 g grated Parmesan or feta cheese
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Peel and slice the sweet potatoes into thin rounds.
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, warm olive oil and sauté chopped onions until translucent. Add minced garlic and cook until fragrant.
  3. Stir in the ground meat, cooking until browned. Add canned tomatoes, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and pepper; simmer for about 10 minutes.
  4. In a separate saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Whisk in flour; then gradually add milk while whisking until thickened.
  5. Layer half of the sweet potato slices in a baking dish, followed by half of the meat mixture. Repeat layers with remaining ingredients.
  6. Pour béchamel sauce over the top layer and sprinkle with cheese.
  7. Bake for about 45 minutes or until golden brown.
